Our Yacht Remedy

Our yacht Remedy

Remedy is our yacht, which we have owned since 2020. We bought her coming out of the first lockdown. It was only a couple of weeks after Boris announced that people could travel by car for exercise. She replaced our previous yacht, Hullabaloo, which we had listed for sale just before the pandemic started. We renamed her Remedy, as I believed she was the cure we needed after the COVID pandemic and the stress caused by my previous job.

Our Adventures

We have had many adventures on our own, but we have also enjoyed great times with friends and family aboard. This includes regular trips across the Channel, up to the Solent, down to the West Country, and out to the Isles of Scilly. Check out my boat log for a complete list of our voyages.

As well as cruising, some of the best times have been when rafting up with friends close to home in beautiful places like Newton's Cove and Worbarrow Bay.

What Kind of Boat is Remedy?

Remedy is a 2012 Beneteau Oceanis 45 sloop, powered by a 55hp Yanmar diesel engine. She sleeps eight people in three double cabins made up, plus the saloon that also converts into a fourth double berth.

Comfort on Board

Remedy is extremely comfortable to stay aboard. We spent three months living on her when we moved to Weymouth in February 2023. We have two heads (toilets), with separate showers in both. The L-shaped galley (the kitchen) has two fridges, a gas oven, hob and plenty of storage. We can carry enough water for at least seven days at sea or at anchor, and now with the addition of solar panels, we can enjoy cold beer from the fridge while off-grid.

What is She Like to Sail?

She is not a racer, especially with the weight of my dive kit, paddleboards, tender and lots of wine and beer on board. However, her hull shape, waterline length and slab-reefed mainsail mean she is no slouch.

Speed

I get frustrated if we drop below 7 knots, and we regularly hit 8.5 knots on a good reach with the code zero sail up.

Sails That We Carry

The mainsail and genoa are original to the boat but still set fairly well. When the wind is lighter, I deploy my code zero. This is a lightweight headsail that sits between a large genoa and a spinnaker. With the wind on the beam, we really fly in 8-10 knots of wind.

The one thing I am lacking is a good off-wind sail. That's a sail that is effective when the wind comes from behind us. Many people I take out always assume that a following wind is good, but in reality, it's slow unless we get a really strong blow. What we really like is the wind 90 degrees to us, hitting the beam. What I really need is an asymmetric and symmetric spinnaker in my sail wardrobe. Unfortunately, these large sails are very large and can be a bit of a handful for just three crew. They also cost a lot of money, which I can't justify for the few times a year that I would use them.

She is the Perfect Yacht for Our Family

Every boat is a compromise, but I struggle to think of a boat that can tick more boxes, even if I had a million pounds to spend.

She is fast for a cruiser, without sacrificing comfort for an additional .3 of a knot!

She has a protective arch that keeps the boom safely away from people's heads.

She is wide and can accommodate eight people overnight with ease.

We have a great drop-down rear platform that extends our living space and functions as a bathing platform and beach while we are at anchor.

Most of all to me, she is attractive. I think she carries her lines well and presents well with matching black canopies, covers, ropes, and fenders.
